HURDY-GURDY / HURDY-GURDY

The hurdy-gurdy, which is known as the Hurdy-Gurdy in English, is a string instrument whose strings are made to vibrate by an integrated rotating mechanism. The traditional instrument is modeled on a box lyre. The oldest evidence of this widespread church instrument dates back to the 10th century and has been handed down to this day in the form of the organistrum.

In connection with steampunk, a postmodern movement of retrofuturism, the brand manufacturer UGEARS® presents its own concept of this melodious playing style and lets it sound in the highest tones in a form-bound manner. The UGEARS® models are both visual and art objects that reveal the mechanism of string playing. To do this, a crank is used as a handle to trigger a rotary movement, the technical know-how of which can be traced right down to the sound vibration. The 292-piece wooden model is therefore a rarity and still life in one, which provides the octave of the hurdy-gurdy with a total of six different tones. The openwork surface is richly decorated and offers the music enthusiast a deep insight into the birth of sound.
